Barsuk Records Amazon Spring 2010 Sampler featuring Pearly Gate Music, Rocky Votolato, David Bazan, Viva Voce, and more. That’s a pretty good group, though I expect nothing less from Seattle’s own Barsuk.
Hey Seattle friends, this weekend is Half Price Books’ Washington Warehouse sale, where everything is $3 or less.
!
It’s Saturday (today) and Sunday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. in Greenwood.
9241 Greenwood Ave N
Seattle, WA 98103
For Seattle friends:
The Friends of the Seattle Public Library book sale is this weekend. It started today for members, and Saturday and Sunday it’s open to the rest of us. Click for more info.
Saturday, April 17, 9 a.m. – 5 p.m.
Sunday, April 18, 11 a.m. – 4 p.m.
Today’s Amazon mp3 deal is Patty Griffin’s “1000 Kisses” for only $3.99.
I like Patty Griffin, but I don’t have any of her albums. Must do something about this. Also, I used to frequently have a bus driver in the afternoon who reminded me of Patty Griffin. Maybe it was just her red hair. It’s not like she sang to us while she was driving. Although if she sounded like Patty, I would have gladly listened. That bus driver is on my short list of favorite bus drivers, along with the driver who confided in me that she’s NOT a cyborg, and bus driver who keeps iced cinnamon rolls in that locked compartment by the door and gives them to his friends.
Oh, Metro drivers. Anyway, Patty Griffin…

Record Store Day is April 17! Click here to find stores in your area that are celebrating the day with sales, special releases, performances, and more!
Here in Seattle, Record Store Day is pretty popular, since music is a big deal, but I’d imagine lots of stores across the country are participating too.
Today’s mp3 deal at Amazon is David Bazan’s “Curse Your Branches” for $2.99.
I have not listened to this album, and in fact, I’ve never listened to any of his solo albums. But Pedro the Lion’s “Control” is one of my most favorite albums ever, so I have to assume Dave’s solo stuff isn’t too bad … though probably depressing.
For Seattle friends -
I love The Broadway Grill in Capitol Hill for their delicious beef sliders during late night happy hour. Yesterday I discovered something even better: Broadway Grill now has happy hour all day every day.
All day every day!
Awesome sliders (although they now give you 2 sliders and a few fries instead of 3 sliders) and great drink deals – $2.50 for well drinks is impressive! They also have other $5 small plate specials, including dessert.
And Broadway Grill is only a couple blocks away from the Mystery Coke machine, so it’s a fun night all around!

If you’re thinking about attending Sasquatch (this year’s line-up is really good and I’d like to go for one day at least), there’s a deal you should know about.
Tickets go on sale Saturday, Feb. 20 at 10 a.m. Single-day tickets are $70 (if you wait until a few days before, it’s $80). But the best deal is that you can buy a 3-day pass for only $170! It’s only available through Sunday, Feb. 21 at midnight. Go here for more info.
The festival is May 29-31 at the Gorge.
For Seattle people:
Counting to ten – or at least eight – in Spanish has never been so fun! Ocho in Ballard is having a seriously cheap happy hour (at least for food).
That’s some cheap eats, even if it’s not a super deal on drinks.
Hello! I’m knee deep in unpacking from my move. It takes so long to figure out where to put things and then I know I’ll eventually rearrange it all, so it feels kind of pointless. But it’s the first step and a necessary step in settling in. I have some predicaments in terms of layout and lighting that I’d like to discuss here and ask for advice, but I won’t be talking about that quite yet.
What I can say is that Can’t Stop Moving is awesome. If you live in the Seattle area and you’re looking for movers, I highly recommend them. I got quotes from a few different moving companies around here, and theirs was the best. And not only were their prices good, but the guys were friendly and did a great job moving. The move only took 1 hour and 45 minutes! Aaaaawesome. Least painful move ever.
This is for Seattle folk:
This weekend, Easy Street Records in West Seattle is having a CD & vinyl sidewalk sale. All used CDs on the sidewalk are $2 each or 3 for $5. All used vinyls are $1 each or 3 for $2.
I’ve been to Easy Street in Queen Anne many times, but I’ve never made it out to the West Seattle location. This needs to be remedied.
Easy Street is located at 4559 California Ave SW.
This is for Seattle people:
Did you know that The Stranger keeps an event calendar for food? It includes lots of specially priced events and other fun things – like World Nutella Day! Who knew? Some of the events are more on the fancy end of the spectrum but there are some deals thrown in there too. The next time you feel like heading out for dinner, check the calendar first!
Sub Pop Records has released another edition of their Cyber*** Sampler. (You may remember their sampler from last May.)
Check it out! It features songs from Beach House, The Album Leaf, Flight of the Conchords, Nirvana, Fruit Bats, Grand Archives, and more.
(Thanks, Anika!)
(Sorry I haven’t posted as much lately. Life has been a little ridiculous.)
This one’s for Seattle people…
This weekend, Dec. 5-6, is the Urban Craft Uprising winter show. Admission is free, and it’s at the Seattle Center Exhibition Hall. I’ve never been to one, but I’m intrigued:
Urban Craft Uprising was started in 2004 to showcase the work of independent crafters, artists and designers – to provide a unique, high quality, hand-crafted alternative to “big box” stores and mass produced goods.
At Urban Craft Uprising’s shows, fans can choose from a wide variety of hand-crafted goods including clothing of all types, jewelry, gifts, bags, wallets, buttons, accessories, aprons, children’s goods, toys, housewares, paper goods, candles, journals, art, food & much, much more. Each Urban Craft Uprising show is carefully curated and juried to ensure the best mix of crafts and arts along with originality and uniqueness.
It sounds like a good place to find some unique gifts. And it’s free to check out!
(This one’s for Seattle peeps.)
You know what’s not cute? Waiting outside in the snow for 2 hours for a bus that might never come. Now that the weather is turning colder, you can’t help but be reminded of last year’s Snowpocalypse and the Metro debacle *shiver*.
This year Metro is trying to up their communication efforts. Here are a couple things to know:
There are also various services like onebusaway to track your bus, and I’ve heard there are iPhone apps as well.
Let’s hope this year’s winter weather is a little gentler.

I love this guy. Here’s a fun Matt story: A few years ago, he played a show at Pepperdine, and I organized a group of friends to go. But then the day of the show, I got sick and couldn’t make it. Later that day, my phone rang and it was Matt! My friends talked to him after the show and then called me and gave the phone to Matt. He was very nice – even though I didn’t believe it was him at first.
So, go download his album. And if you like it, buy some of his other stuff!

(Thanks for the tip, Misty.)
Check out this article about a young woman who’s taken her fondness for drawing and turned it into a fun, creative way to earn a few bucks. She draws flowers on slips using Sharpies, and they look kind of cool!
I wanted to highlight this story for a few reasons:
If you live in Seattle, listen up. If you like to dine out, check out Stranger Mart (brought to you, obviously, by The Stranger). You can get awesome deals on gift certificates to good restaurants (try the sliders at late night happy hour at Broadway Grill – amazing!). There’s a bunch of places, including Bimbo’s (did you know they have happy hour all day on Mondays – also amazing!), Skylark Cafe, Triple Door, and Via Tribunali. Enjoy!
(Thanks, Seattle Moms Deal Finder)
You can download a 2009 sample mp3 album from Hardly Art (a record label here in Seattle). It’s free at Amazon, and it features The Dutchess & The Duke, Arthur & Yu, The Moondoggies, and more.

I’m not really into keeping track of everything I buy (though I should be). But one thing that I have found to be handy is a free program at Mint.com.
Mint allows you to link all of your bank accounts, credit cards, loans, 401(k), and pretty much any other financial outlets all into 1 handy page. It’s not going to replace your online banking, but it allows for a quick way to get an overall estimate of how much you’re spending and where. It can be quite telling!
It’s safe (or as safe as an online account can be), and it’s free and easy to use. It’ll take a little time to enter all of the information for your accounts, but after that it’s a breeze.
One of the things that I really like about Mint is the transactions page. It puts every financial transaction (aside from things you paid for with cash) on 1 page and automatically classifies each transaction into a category. It’s necessary, however, to go through and look at how it classifies because sometimes it will put things in the wrong category.
It can also do strange things to the names of companies. My favorite one is from an awesome bar/restaurant here in Ballard (Seattle) called Hattie’s Hat. This is how it showed my transaction:

Ahhh. It still makes me laugh. While I certainly appreciate the Shat, I think my favorite part is the Wa. As in “Hattie shat whaaaaa?” Needless to say, Hattie’s Hat will forever be known as Hattie Shat.
Anyway, if you haven’t already checked out Mint, I suggest doing so. It might not change how you spend, but it’s at least a reminder about how much.
This is for Seattle only:
Sonic Boom in Capitol Hill (on 15th Ave.) is moving to a new location (still in Capitol Hill), and they’re having a huge sale. All their non-sale merchandise is 20% off, and it runs until Oct. 25. For more info, check out the LineOut post.
(Thanks to Anika for the tip!)

Click here to download a free song (from Amazon) from Seattle’s own The Maldives.
This one’s for Seattle peeps only…

Tweed in Greenwood (on 85th, a couple blocks east of Greenwood Ave.) is closing Sept. 27, and they’re having a good clearance sale. All regularly priced items are buy one, get one free, and the sale stuff is 50% off. Also, some of the bags are 50% off.
I like Tweed, but I don’t usually shop there because it’s expensive. But the BOGO deal is pretty good.
They also have a a lot of nice men’s stuff.

This one’s for Seattle area people only.

Ikea Seattle (check the Ikea web site for your local Ikea promotions) is having a Wacky Weekend rummage sale Saturday, Aug. 15 and Sunday, Aug. 16 from 10 a.m. – 7:30 p.m. According to the web site:

(Thanks, Centsible in Seattle)
Amazon is offering the new Throw Me the Statue (from Seattle) album Creaturesque for $3.99. It’s available 24 hours early, and it’s today’s daily deal, so don’t delay.
This is mostly for Seattle people – or people who want to visit Seattle
Bumbershoot is doing their annual ticket savings deal. If you go to http://www.bumbershoot.org/tickets/promo.htm and enter SWEETDEAL as the promo code, you can get single day tickets for $25/day (normally $50) or 3-day passes for $80 (normally $120).
Now let’s do the math because something is fishy.
$25/day x 3 days = $75, plus $2 service/fee per ticket = $81 + $3.50 handling fee = $84.50
vs. $80/3 days, plus $2 service fee, plus $3.50 handling fee = $85.50
Hmmm…. only a dollar’s difference, but still … If you go all 3 days, why not buy the 3 separate passes? And then if you decide you don’t want to go one day, you can sell your ticket for just that day.
(Shout out to all my old math teachers who helped make this shopping comparison possible … and shout out to MathNet!)

Dear Seattle friends,
Have you ever had frozen custard? It’s pretty delicious – like ice cream but smoother and according to someone online, less calories (like that really matters). Woo hoo!
A new frozen custard place just opened up in Capitol Hill called Old School Frozen Custard. It’s on Pike and 13th. I went there tonight and I can tell you that it’s really good. My dining companions agreed.
And the best news …. This Saturday, June 6, they’re giving away free cones from 3-10 p.m.. Go get yourself some frozen goodness!
